Play paradise mud kitchen: What you need to pay attention to

Children love mud. This fact can hardly be denied. And they don't care whether it's summer or winter. Playing with sand and water on the patio, balcony, or garden is an absolute highlight in any season and an outdoor activity that encourages your child's creativity. To bring even more fun and enjoyment to your outdoor space with new creations and the use of all kinds of toys, you should consider a mud kitchen. Mud kitchens made of wood or plastic are available from many reputable suppliers, but the prices deter many parents from buying an outdoor kitchen for children. It's actually child's play to build one yourself using wooden boxes, an old children's kitchen, or a toy shop. We'll show you step by step what you need to pay attention to when building a mud kitchen for your child.

We build a mud kitchen: Here's how

You don't have to be a craftsman or woman to build a mud kitchen. Of course, it's possible to build a truly designer outdoor play kitchen, but we want to focus on fun rather than aesthetics. But what exactly goes into a mud kitchen? And how high should it be so that children of all ages can enjoy it? We'll answer these and other questions in this article and offer a few tips for turning your mud kitchen into the play highlight of your garden or balcony.

Step 1: The right material

To find the best material for you, you should first consider how your mud kitchen should be constructed, what essentials should be, and what it should look like. Do you want to build a mud kitchen from scratch, or do you want to use existing materials and perhaps secure them with a few boards and screws? The best material for an outdoor play kitchen where you can make lots of mud is wood. You should make sure that it is solid wood and that the wood is properly impregnated. This impregnation ensures that your child can enjoy their mud kitchen for a long time and can bake you delicious sand cakes year after year. Since your child will be in contact with the mud kitchen material in all weather conditions, it is also a good idea to use wood that has been tested for harmful substances or to use appropriate paints when painting.

Step 2: The perfect height

Is there a perfect height? Probably not, but using your child as a benchmark, you can easily determine what height your mud kitchen should be to provide your child with the most enjoyment. The ideal height for mud kitchens, play kitchens, or toy shops is: The work surface should not be higher than your child's belly button. You should also make sure that the attached accessories aren't too high on the back wall, so your child can easily reach all the toys. You can achieve a good height by stacking two wooden crates or old beverage crates on top of each other and, ideally, screwing them together to ensure stability.

Step 3: The must-have

Water is an absolute must for every mud kitchen. You don't need a dedicated tap, although that will positively impact the look of your mud kitchen. An old faucet and a garden hose can easily be used to create a water connection for your mud kitchen, making playing even more fun. It's also a good idea to incorporate two basins into the mud kitchen so the sand and water can be mixed properly. If you don't want to use plastic crates, you can also line wooden crates with plastic sheeting and secure them with small nails or a stapler. This way, the children can play to their heart's content without the water running away, and you might even make a delicious soup or two in the process.

Step 4: The accessories

Even the most beautiful DIY mud kitchen is boring and won't be enjoyed if the right accessories are missing. Whether it's old gardening tools, discarded pots, chests, or toys from the sandbox – children need all sorts of utensils to cook with mud, utensils they're probably familiar with from your kitchen at home. Why not check out a flea market together for inexpensive items, ask relatives for pots without lids or broken wooden spoons, or collect empty jars. Many unwanted or even damaged household items can be transformed into excellent toys.

Mud kitchens – fun for the whole family

Whether as a planting table for parents, a craft table for siblings, or simply for extensive mud play – a mud kitchen is highly recommended, and not just for children, and offers plenty of opportunities for creativity. If you want to make things easy, you can simply stack a few wooden crates and, with bowls, some toys, and pots for the little chef, create a water and sand experience that will put the sandbox and children's room to shame, especially in summer. If you want something a little more elaborate, you can score points with a combination of crates and a pallet. There are countless DIY instructions for this online.

We hope that some of these tips for the right accessories, the optimal height, or the components for your mud kitchen were helpful for your next construction project, and we look forward to seeing the results of your DIY mud kitchens soon.
