Erstausstattung Baby: Eine Liste im Sinne der Nachhaltigkeit

Baby's first equipment: A list in the spirit of sustainability

Less is more. If you want to approach your baby's first supplies from a sustainable perspective, it's not just about using sustainable products and raw materials, but also about reducing things to the bare essentials.

If you put fewer items on your baby's first-time supplies list, fewer resources will be used to produce them. This is where sustainability begins! First, we'll show you the most important items you need for your baby's first-time supplies. Then, we'll cover general topics and show you how to shop more sustainably and what to look for when choosing materials.

This is the basic equipment you really need: A checklist

We'd like to show you what, in terms of sustainability, really belongs on your first-time shopping list. Some items are best bought new, but others can be purchased secondhand, borrowed from friends, or passed on to your neighbors or friends—from newborn to newborn.

baby cradle

A crib is really practical, especially in the first few weeks. Especially if it's mobile. You always have your baby close by, allowing you to care for them as best as possible, breastfeed them or give them a bottle, and keep them close to you. But after the first few weeks, the baby will already be outgrown and become more agile, so buying a new crib is only partially worthwhile.

Baby bed

Of course, you can also rent a crib or buy one used. However, since you'll be using it for several years, it's worth buying new. This is especially true if you're buying a modular crib that initially serves as a side bed and whose rails can be removed later. If you buy a used crib, however, you should buy a new mattress to ensure everything is hygienically clean.

Changing table

A changing table will be with you for some time and certainly has a design aspect in the nursery. Therefore, buying used or new is a really good idea. Look for changing tables that you can later convert into a regular dresser; this makes the purchase even more worthwhile.

Tips for sustainable diapering

- Ideally, use cloth or eco-friendly diapers.

- Use sustainable, vegan natural cosmetics without paraffins and other unnatural or even harmful substances.

- Make your own reusable wipes: Take an old towel and cut it into small pieces, or use a pre-washed washcloth, and place them in a sealable container. With 250 ml of boiled water and a tablespoon of coconut oil, you can make an excellent lotion that gently cares for your baby's intimate area. Pour the water-oil mixture over the washcloths and close the container. Stored this way, you can use the wipes for several days, and the dirty ones can simply be thrown in the laundry.

stroller

used ✓ | rent ✓ | buy new ✓

Even though you could theoretically rent a stroller or buy one used, buying a new one is recommended. Newer strollers are usually more ergonomic and safer than earlier models, and a stroller will last you through toddlerhood. Opt for a combo stroller that you can convert—one that initially comes with an infant car seat and can later accommodate a seat. When buying a new stroller, make sure it's made of recycled plastic.

baby sling

To start with, it's definitely worth borrowing different types of baby slings from friends to see which model works best for you and your baby. Once you've found the right type and gotten a feel for the different options, you can buy a new one or perhaps find one secondhand. It's even better to visit a babywearing consultation with your baby after the birth. Here, you'll receive advice from a trained professional, can try out different carrying systems, and find the one that's perfect for you and your baby.

Sustainable clothing and shoes for your baby

used ✓ | rent ✗ | buy new ✓

Especially when it comes to baby clothes, you can rely on a mix of new and used. Things you rarely need, like a warm snowsuit, are great to buy secondhand. You'll see, the first few months will fly by, and your baby will quickly outgrow their basic outfit. Therefore, buying new is absolutely not worth it.

In any case, you should always opt for high-quality materials. Organic cotton is best. We'll cover this in more detail later. Sustainability in baby clothes also means durability and longevity. Basically, it's enough to get the following items as a starting point:

  • 5-6 rompers and bodysuits. Take a look at our Organic Knit Dungarees, for example . You're sure to love them.
  • 3-4 leggings such as the Organic Rib Leggings made from GOTS-certified organic cotton.
  • 2-3 beanies, hats or scarves to protect your baby from the effects of wind and weather.
  • 2 pairs of shoes - ideally our vegan first walker shoes in 3 different collections.
  • A jacket, some socks and a sleeping bag complete the initial equipment, depending on the season.

toy

Did you know that you can also rent toys? Some platforms offer wonderful toy rental packages, bringing variety into your home without having tons of toys sitting in the corners. And used toys are also a really nice addition to some new items.

In general, a newborn doesn't need that many toys in the first few months. A pretty mobile above the crib, a stuffed animal, and a homemade crinkle blanket are perfectly sufficient to keep your baby entertained. Only gradually can you add toys, either homemade or purchased.

What you don’t (necessarily) need

You don't need to buy your own baby bathtub because, on the one hand, it's unnecessary use of plastic and, on the other hand, your own bathtub or a large sink is absolutely sufficient for your baby.

If your baby is due in winter, you may need a radiant heater near the changing table, as your newborn isn't yet able to regulate their own body temperature very well. Even with summer babies, a radiant heater can create a cozy spot for your baby after bathing. However, buying a new one is rarely worthwhile, as the lifetime of use is far too short. Ask around; there's surely someone in your circle of friends who can borrow one.

What constitutes sustainability in initial equipment?

Sustainability encompasses various aspects that play a role beyond the initial equipment for a newborn. Let's take a look at the most important points:

The right materials are the foundation for sustainable products. Avoid those made of plastic and consider using vegan materials instead. GOTS-certified organic cotton is particularly suitable . This is produced under strict guidelines, and the workers who produce the cotton are not neglected either. We are very proud that our cotton is certified according to this standard.

When it comes to wood, you should also focus on renewable raw materials and choose either a bed or changing table made of bamboo or other sustainable and regional wood species. Plastic parts should be avoided at all costs.

Fairly traded products should always be preferred. Social responsibility also plays a significant role in sustainability. How can you buy something with a clear conscience when you know that most of the people in the product's value chain have been exploited?

The longevity of a product is also an important aspect of sustainability. The higher the quality of something, and the longer it can therefore remain in use, the more sensible the resources used in its use.

Extra tip at the end:

A cherry stone pillow is a great addition to your baby's first supplies. It's versatile and completely natural—especially if you choose an organic cotton cover.

You can use the cherry stone bag, for example, to warm your breast. This really gets the milk flowing and provides your baby with pleasant warmth when you breastfeed them.

Later, you can gently massage your baby's tummy with the cherry stone bag to protect it from cramps and stimulate digestion.
